Acapella of Dr. Horrible’s "My Eyes"

October 29, 2008

I watched Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog yesterday and I love it! It’s not a laugh out loud film but the dialogue and the songs are really good. The story is actually kind of shallow, but it explores the archetype of the mad doctor villain with sensitivity and insight. After all, evil mad doctors were not born evil or instantly doctors. Maybe they’re actually named a nondescript “Billy” and they take out their laundry to the coin wash where they meet the girl of their dreams. Maybe they actually have moral dilemmas. It’s pretty cool when you think about it.

Anyway, I’ve been singing one the songs from the musical film the whole day. It’s called “My Eyes” and was sung by Neil Patrick Harris (Dr. Horrible aka Billy) and Felicia Day (Penny). Here’s a small part I sang (my favoritest part) acapella, just because. Don’t forget to download and watch the film!

My Eyes

                          My Eyes

Music by Jed Whedon

Lyrics by Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon, and Joss Whedon

Performed by Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day

Guitar by Nick Gusikoff

HORRIBLE

Any dolt with half a brain

Can see that humankind has gone insane

To the point where I don’t know

If I’ll upset the status quo

If I throw poison in the water main

Listen close to everybody’s heart

And hear that breaking sound

Hopes and dreams are shattering apart

And crashing to the ground

I cannot believe my eyes

How the world’s filled with filth and lies

But it’s plain to see

Evil inside of me is on the rise

PENNY

Look around

We’re living with the lost and found

Just when you feel you’ve almost drowned

You find yourself on solid ground

And you believe

There’s good in everybody’s heart

Keep it safe and sound

With hope, you can do your part

To turn a life around

I cannot believe my eyes

Is the world finally growing wise

‘Cause it seems to me

Some kind of harmony

Is on the rise

HORRIBLE (overlapping with Penny below)

Anyone with half a brain

Could spend their whole life howling in pain

‘Cause the dark is everywhere

And Penny doesn’t seem to care

That soon the dark in me is all that will remain

Listen close to everybody’s heart

And hear that breaking sound

Hopes and dreams are shattering apart

And crashing to the ground

I cannot believe my eyes

How the world’s filled with filth and lies

But it’s plain to see

Evil inside of me is on the rise

PENNY

Take it slow

He looks at me and seems to know

The things that I’m afraid to show

And suddenly I feel this glow

And I believe

There’s good in everybody’s heart

Keep it safe and sound

With hope, you can do your part

To turn a life around

I cannot believe my eyes

How the world’s finally growing wise

And it’s plain to see

Rapture inside of me is on the rise

YAY! YOU DIDN’T HATE IT!

Came across this through a Dr. Horrible Google Alert. “Not laugh-out-loud funny?” Well, that’s all a matter of opinion. ;) I laughed many times out loud. Then again, I’m a big fan of Whedon & co’s humor.

I do have to argue with the shallow factor though. For a 45 minute internet special, I feel it has incredible depth. Though said depth can be missed by a viewer. But what with you mentioning it exploring an evil-doer’s many layers, not too sure how you came to the conclusion of it lacking depth. Anyway! Glad you enjoyed it. :)

no, i didn’t LOL. :)

when i meant the story was “shallow”, i meant that it was simple and verges on cliche. its the message and the treatment of the characters that made the difference.
