Anniversary

May 2, 2008

Exactly a year ago, around 7 PM, I was starting to fall asleep on a bench in Ortigas Park. The person I was waiting for was 45 minutes late.

"Okay, fifteen more minutes and I’ll go home," I told myself. There was no reason to wait, really, and no, it’s not for romantic reasons that I did. I’ve never met him, but he seemed like an interesting guy online—only, he was forty-five minutes late and I had to go home to Cavite, which is three hours away from Ortigas. You can’t believe how much I was pissed off by then. In fact, don’t. Have you ever been so mad but were too tired to get THAT mad? It was more like that.

Anyway he did finally come and nothing happened. It was the usual coffee date, hi, hello, what do you do, where have you been, who have you been with—the works. As far as I was concerned it was nothing special. Here’s an unimpressive-looking guy with an unimpressive-looking girl having coffee and both of them were too tired to make an impression that night. But they did, apparently. They’ve been together for a year.

So how was it been? Oh, difficult but happy. The adjective "difficult" painfully summarizes all the tears and screaming on the phone because we see each other so rarely, and "happy" is how it is when I flick his hair off his face. We fight so often that it could be hard to believe that we seriously love each other, but we do. I don’t fight with anyone I don’t respect and I don’t do it repeatedly with someone that I don’t love. This is one thing that we have in common. Peter told me once that it doesn’t matter if two people are so different from each other as long as there is this one bond that keeps them together. Ironically enough, aggressiveness is our bond.

This was taken in June last year. We’re still as happy now as we looked here.

Liz! I’m so happy for the both of you! Congratulations! Recognizing the fact that being in a serious romantic relationship with someone is not at all a bed of roses is a huge step towards a lasting bond. I just have this feeling that you guys will go a long, long, long way. :-)
