I was filling up a police clearance form for my security pass at the Senate when I had to answer "Religion:______"

 

Liz: Ma, I’ll write none.

Mama: Write "Catholic"

Liz: No, its none.

Mama: Catholic.

Liz: (looks at mother with a look of indignation mixed with annoyance)

Mama: (looks at daughter with an if-you-don’t-do-this-you-gonna-get-it look)

Liz: Religion: Catholic .

Although obviously I don’t have anything much to say, but it occurred to me you shouldn’t have written “none” too. Then again, you don’t really call yourself an atheist…

having no religion and being atheist are two entirely different things, compadre.

being atheist means that you don’t believe in any supernatural entity or deity.

having no religion simply means that you don’t ascribe to the teachings to any religious sect, denomination or church.

being atheist and having no religion can be two mutually inclusive factors, but they are not NECESSARILY so. in other words, it doesn’t mean that because i have no religion, i am automatically atheist.

so yeah, big diff.

Meh. I write ‘Roman Catholic’ in official forms, too. I don’t really consider ‘Atheist’ as a religion and it never occurred to me to write down ‘None’.

i always write “roman catholic” whenever i have to fill up something. I usually don’t tell people i’m an atheist unless i feel it’s worth my time to debate them
