Balaki

April 29, 2008

There was this woman in a red suit interviewed at Umagang Kay Ganda this morning about "balakis", or people who have undergone sex change. I’m trying to look for the video but I guess it’s too early for someone to upload it (or probably too insignificant). I don’t know if the woman is a lawyer or a doctor, or anyone who might possibly qualify to discuss that sensitive topic with any sense, but whoever she is, the gist of the interview sort of annoyed me.

The bit of it that I can remember is the interviewer asking the woman if a potential transsexual should think about his or her heart first (the desire to be a member of the opposite sex) or to be practical about the decision (meaning, not to go ahead with it because of the social stigma and trauma that will result from it). The woman said that one should think about the kid that might be born from the union. She said the kid should be protected from inheriting the social stigma from his or her transsexual parents and the best way to do this is not to bear children at all or simply say no to one’s heart (or refuse a sex change).

Shouldn’t there be a third option somewhere?

Bone, Muscle and Oyo Boy Sotto

April 25, 2008

I met Marco the other day and I was happily suprised: he looks better. In fact, he looks dashing. He was wearing his favorite hoodie (which I hate so much since it looks like a piece of spotty vegetable. I have a picture of it somewhere zipped up to cover my head and I looked like okra. Anyway.), green cargo pants and his leather Converse sneakers. He looked nice even with the okra jacket so if I thought that he must really look special yesterday. I mean, I did not fall in love with him for aesthetic reasons, but when I saw him yesterday I thought that then was a good time.

How To Survive The Attack of A Giant Fruit Fly

April 23, 2008

So this is the scenario: you are walking home when suddenly, a giant fruit fly with four hairy human legs on its right side, and two hipoppotamus heads and two placenta soap bars as feet on its left side. The mutated fruit fly is squinting at you menacingly, wondering if you are easily digestible. One hippotamus head walked towards your direction. What do you do? Here are a few simple tips:

The Hard-Nosed Dreamers

April 22, 2008

I’m starting to have fun.

I attended a Senate public hearing for the second time early this morning. It was about the bills proposing to build a railroad in Mindanao to stimulate its flagging economy by producing jobs and incentives for the industries in the far South to produce more. If you know me, you should know that I hate hate hate HATE going to any formal event where people other than myself get to talk for extended periods of time; this includes fora and symposia at the University where (if I have the choice) I walk out fifteen minutes after the start of the program. I have a short attention span—this is a fault, sure, but it saves me a lot of time. College life is too short to waste a third of it on uninspiring forums.

Sellout Visionary

April 18, 2008

I was filling up a police clearance form for my security pass at the Senate when I had to answer "Religion:______"

Liz: Ma, I’ll write none.

Mama: Write "Catholic"

Liz: No, its none.

Mama: Catholic.

Liz: (looks at mother with a look of indignation mixed with annoyance)

Mama: (looks at daughter with an if-you-don’t-do-this-you-gonna-get-it look)

Liz: Religion: Catholic

Blogging Live From The Senate of the Philippines

Having fun

No, it’s not as cool as you think. One week here and I’ve managed to cry unadulterated tears of boredom and to get sick with your friendly neighborhood flu. Don’t get me wrong though—the people are awesome. They’re nice, they’re smart, they’re sometimes funny in a good way. But I am more than the tiniest bit bored. I am writing this while my head is pounding and I just KNOW that it’s gonna get worse tomorrow…when I’m discreetly playing PSP while "listening" to the hearing of the Committee on Ways and Means at 9 am. How awesome can things get?

You Have Nothing To Be Proud Of

April 12, 2008

Here’s a pretty question: are you doing exactly what you want to do with your life right now? That is, are you doing what you love, are you doing it for yourself alone and do you want to do it for the rest of your life? No, don’t think about the salary or your allowance, stop thinking about how much your parents want this and not that, don’t worry about the people who egg you on to do the "right" thing. Just answer this short, important question:

Are you doing exactly what you want to do with your life right now?

If you aren’t, then you have nothing to be proud of.

Busy Being Snotty

April 9, 2008

Okay, so what have I been up to? A lot. I’ve said somewhere-abouts that I don’t LIKE being busy. If I had a choice, I’d lie around all day eating my favorite brand of aerated white chocolate and getting fat. But I need to earn some monies for my materialistic impulses and the only way to go about it is to, what else, work for it.

Right now, I’m doing part-time freelance writing jobs. I’m currently working on four projects which should pay me a decent amount of money, which of course makes me happy. I also have a biznes yay! I’m selling makeup here, so please do visit and buuuy from me.

Also, I’m starting my OJT at the Senate tomorrow as part of Senator Revilla’s staff. I’m not particularly excited about the whole thing since I’m pretty busy already, but as usual, it’s one of the things I have to hurdle as a bored and discontented Political Science student. Like hey! Just one more year and I’m home free!

Dear Ivan, My Biggest Fan (and plagiarist)

April 4, 2008

I would like to say that I was born to write like this, but I’m not—it took me more than half a thousand books, hundreds of blogs, and tons of newspaper/magazine articles, among other things. I consumed all these in a span of twenty years. I haven’t stopped of course; I’m still trying to improve myself by reading anything I can get my hands on and observing anything worth the effort. It’s a process that will never end so long as I feel the urge to let the world know what I think.

And then I find out that someone is plagiarizing me.  The person’s name is Ivan Espineda, whose blog can be found at http://ravenfall.multiply.com. You won’t be able to read the blog since it’s for friends only, so you would have to settle for screen shots.
