Hole In The Earth

August 8, 2007

What a nice bath, isn't it, in the middle of  the  rain- and oil-slicked road,  being showered by muddy water from the muddy tires of passing cars and trucks.  A nice, small  hole filled with fresh, polluted rainwater and you're ready to go.  Dirt. Bacteria. Sanitation, sanity. These are  elitist occupations.

What a way to freshen up for street kids. Simple joys, indeed.

Well, they got their own swimming pool. Complete with shower.

Unsanitary though. I just hope none of those got any open wound.

J: only rich people have the time and resources to obssess about sanitation.

metro rain showers are toxic i observed. i got my feet soaking wet and the itch won’t go in weeks.

Marco didn’t have this kind of fun when still a child. Sometimes, I regret having sheltered him, protected him too much. Kaya siguro naging sakitin tuloy siya noong bata.

Is that a pothole?

Anyway, no amount of awww-ing and aaahh-ing will make me say that what they are doing can incite glee/joy/elation. The world basically revolves around this context: If I’m poor, I’d be happy with money. And that’s precisely how the urban poor thinks. These kids will soon grow up to be thieves. Anyway, that’s another topic, completely irrelevant. (See how pessimistic I am? Or is this called realistic? lol)

badoodles: ugh. that could kill you.

rhodora, he’s been sickly lately. i think it’s all this rain. plus he stays up really late. tigas kasi ng ulo!

I was really amused by the message behind this really simple post. Very nice and truthful.

I’ll be back for more! :)

there are studies that say kids need dirt and bacterias while growing up so their bodies will be germs resistant as they grow older because their system will develop anti-bodies. the studies even suggested that it’s alright for kids to swallow dirt. kaso wala akong copy ng link to those studies kaya dont take my word for it hehe

Leptospires are the cause of the infectious disease, Leptospirosis, which is common during rainy seasons because of the flood. The flood water becomes a vehicle for infected rodents’ and other animals’ urine containing the leptospires, which could get penetrate your skin through open wounds or even through intact mucous membranes. It’s a treatable disease as long as it’s caught in the early stages.

@promdi: I think I’d rather say that kids need proper nutrition so that they can build a good defense system against bacteria and viruses. Yes, contact with certain bacterias can help a person develop antibodies to that particular bacteria, so once it encounters it again, the person will not get sick anymore. However, it would be misleading to tell people to get unhygienic so that they’d develop antibodies as much as possible because the process isn’t as simple as that.

prudence, very informative.

this is what i think:

i wasn’t a very neat person when i was younger. and i love street food. but i’m relatively healthy—i rarely get sick. either leptospires love me or they hate me.

Are they like swimming at a mud hole in the middle of the highway?! getting some disease from this kinda water is one thing, but they are in the middle of a highway! With that weather some car could slip and head straight on to where they are! 0_O
