Crocogator Tears
June 16, 2007What's up with Wowowee? I know it's founded on horrible gunk like the shameless promotion of mendicancy and tasteless theme jingles, among others, but no one can deny this: it's fucking good entertainment. Cheap entertainment, to be exact. The geniuses who thought of tapping on the inherent sad and happy stories within each participant to provide noontime entertainment for the rest of us is simply brilliant. And cost-efficient. Of course, throw in a few scantily-clad, gyrating women in the picture and you're all set to beat the ass of more than a quarter-century running show like Eat Bulaga.
Wowowee is gruesome and morbid. All those poor people hoping for a whiff of dollar ecstatically jumping like crazy monkeys not fed for a week. All those ex-Pinoy traitors with their forced American accents saying hi to their relatives and throwing green money around as if they use it for toilet paper. Morbid—it's like not wanting to watch a car crash but peeking between your fingers anyway. And, ah, yes, the dancing women. They all look creepily alike, like marionettes controlled by one secret hand. Gruesome.
Then again. It's probably just me.
I have an observation: the kids cry all the time when they say thanks to their mommies and daddies. Well not just kids. Everyone in general cries, sometimes sobs, whenever they give their messages to their loved ones. Some of them even start crying before their goddamn messages. Why? I don't get it. Maybe knowing that one is being watched by like all the bored people in the Philippines brings one's tender feelings to the very surface of one's being. Or maybe they just want more money from Sir Willie. I mean, the ones who cry the hardest get extra moolah so that's something to consider. Money is a very good thing. A few fake tears and, who knows, an extra three grand never hurt anyone.
All these ramblings aside though, I DO like watching Wowowee. It's all about real people and real stories. It may be morbid and it may be gruesome but it paints an accurate picture of our current social reality. Don't get me started on metaphors and aphorisms or whatever. Wowowee is morbid ang gruesome. Life is morbid and gruesome.

Posted by alohapenny at June 16, 2007, 4:23 pmActually… true, true. But you didn’t say you hated it, right? You’re just doing media criticism - the sort of thing we do.
Posted by Niko at June 16, 2007, 6:09 pmThe nice thing about wowowee is that it is a game show for people, who generally have little or no education at all, that has questions like “Who invented the ‘geazelgooer’ (im not even sure if I spelled that half-correct!!) used formerly for dynamite?”
And then luckily, someone wins. Well, I don’t expect that it is because of intelligence but of pure damn luck or maybe its part of the script.
And for some reason, people love it…
Posted by Vic at June 16, 2007, 10:54 pmMARKETING GENIUS!
Posted by marc at June 17, 2007, 1:22 amwowowee=the most loved (and hated for some) pinoy tv show on earth! hehe…and i love it…
Posted by saturn at June 17, 2007, 1:29 amjaywalker: it can be argued that it IS for barely intlligent Filipinos. but then we’re all alitists here so i don’t know if that’s a very right thing to say.
alohapenny: really? get some for my mom? she loves it. ^_^
niko: yeah, i didn’t say i hate it. i actually like watching it. i laugh and cry with it.
vic: i don’t think they have very much of a script. but who knows?
marc: yes. exactly. in th world today, it’s really all that matters.
saturn: haha, it depends i guess.

wahahah..brilliant.

Posted by lizette at June 17, 2007, 2:34 pmActually it’s shows like wowowee that serves as a mirror to the social condition of our country. It paints a bitter but truthful image of our masses - blind, hungry and shallow. And being so we should not sneer at these shows, rather use them to raise awareness about the masses’ worsening condition in society and the stigma that we unjustly brand the masses with through mainstream media.
Posted by Marco, the site guy at June 17, 2007, 3:15 pmhey wow you’re back.
Posted by lizette at June 17, 2007, 3:17 pmI personally never bought into the whole Wowowee craze, but wowowee! How quickly it caught on with the rest of the country! It’s remarkable!
Posted by Celle at June 17, 2007, 4:34 pmYeah, aren’t we all just in denial like we usually are?
Haha. I have to say, I almost fell to my knees when they featured OFW in Reno. I couldn’t believe that I almost cried!
Posted by rian at June 18, 2007, 6:32 amhi liz.. miss your blog..take care..

hay..no matter how i hate wowowee and eat bulaga, channel 2 and 7..it is the culture hammered and formed through the years i have to defy.
Posted by dave at June 18, 2007, 12:53 pmhonestly? i found the show cringeworthy. i wouldn’t mind so much if genuine emotions (w/o any ulterior motive) are involved…
it’s a vicious cycle, with participants sucking up to the hilt to milk all the “awa” points they can translate to cold cash and the network riding on these people’s misfortunes to improve their ratings and pad their revenues.
unless we find a way to reduce our dependence on such meaningless stopgap measures, are lives are not going to get better. surely we can do better than this.
on the upside, viewers do get entertained and those who work for the show get to earn their salaries.
Posted by onyxx at June 18, 2007, 3:38 pmthere are some instances in the said tv show that show real emotions. and it cant be denied (or perhaps, they are just good actors, lol)
i think noontime shows will always be a part of filipino viewing habit. dont start with those endless soap operas please.
hi liz… hope you’re doin fine
agree, agree. hi totomai!
long time no anything.
Oh well.. the program shows the sad reality of the condition of our poor kababayans.. They will do anything (kahit mgamukha silang tanga) just to get a few dollars.
Adodododo hahaha
Posted by Mica at June 19, 2007, 11:02 amWowowee is taking advantage of the poor and downtrodden. Kunwari, Wowowee cares for them by being generous, but the truth is - the production staff and the network are raking hefty dough through these poor souls. Ginagawa silang parang circus attraction sa show for the sake of the ratings and ad placements. Sickening. I don’t like it. True, entertaining sometimes, but I can’t stand watching it for more than 10 minutes.
Posted by rhodora at June 19, 2007, 1:19 pmi don’t it when they are “forcing” the kids to cry.
Posted by reese at June 19, 2007, 5:13 pmi don’t like it when they are ‘’forcing” the kids to cry.
arrgggghh..sorry typo error…
Posted by reese at June 19, 2007, 5:16 pmthose people organizing those noontime shows are not realy different from the corrupt politicians that are also shown on tv in the news, they give a lil bit to the poor and get a big heap of money because of it. and also, putting down the masses.
Posted by dan at June 19, 2007, 5:38 pm‘forcing’ the kids to cry? what’s your premise? It may be obvious for you, pero for some, di nila nakikita. Mind if you elaborate it po?
Posted by dudung at June 20, 2007, 1:17 pmWowowee is there to earn money and to beat Eat Bulaga. I think, their strategies and schemes are working for them.
Posted by tom at June 20, 2007, 2:55 pmyou couldn’t have said it better.
wowowee is a sad reflection of our society. when did somebody else’s misfortunes ever become part of entertainment? it’s exploitation. and those being exploited willingly go through it as long as they get a chance to take home a few pesos to guarantee their next few meals. sad, isn’t it?
and it’s not just wowowee. even simple singing competitions would have video introductions where contestants, on the verge of tears, share their tough, sad lives before singing on stage. it’s becoming too common that I can’t help but ask, are the lives of filipinos really this depressing? why then, are we still considered some of the happiest people on earth?
Posted by Dan at June 22, 2007, 3:53 pmSaw your blog through uneditedmara.
Wowowee is GENIUS. I mean, really. It’s like a charity show/marketing ploy/PR event all in one money-making, controversy-inducing variety show. it’s just absolute genius. and they even got the pinoys from abroad to shoulder some of their prizes. Brilliant.
Posted by whoopsydaisies at June 26, 2007, 11:36 amTo the wowowee management: certainly a marketing genius. I mean, balikbayans see it on TFC and wanna get their dollar filled asses on the show, heck I’d love to get mine there as well pag umuwi ulit ako. but to say whether or not they care bout ‘em pinoys comin up to the show or they’re just takin advantage of them, i dunno, i wouldn’t judge, heck they’re still givin away money to em pinoys that NEED it. they coulda done a better job with a lil less rude host tho.
to the pinoys: they don’t care bout any marketing shit goin on with the show. that don’t matter. If i was one of ‘em hardworking pinoys who work my ass off everyday just to keep the rice comin for my kids, i’d effin break a tear too kase kahit for a lil while the shows givin me an escape from the reality goin on sa pinas and have a good time.
what I think: Whatever this show is, I’d rather see it as an escape for some of ‘em pinoys who need it and need some money. I’m damm happy for them as much as I am proud how pinoys make it through. i also think pinas needs some serious fixin right away. It’s getting worse to tha point these scenes fill up noon time ratings
Posted by jm at July 7, 2007, 3:35 pmAs an white guy married to a Filipino, I enjoy WOWOWEE. Although there is probably ABS/CBN corruption, we also have that here in the States, it’s called capitalism. Are the poor contestants not like those on American Idol? Or The Price is Right? Are they not chasing a dream? If a vendor or labandara can be lucky enoughto make an extra P 3,000 + $20, is that not a good thing? The average sales clerk in SM makes about P250 a day. Why not take some balikbayan money and spread it around. So Willie and ABS/CBN make the big money? Did you know that Simon Cowell makes $45 million a year. All you self righteous Filipinos that think WOWOWEE is sooooo manipulating to the poor Pinoy…grow up please.
