Innarnet Crap

May 23, 2007

The past summers I read books until my eyesight became the blurry, sorry mess it is now. I'd wake up in the morning and grab a book from a pile freshly bought from Booksale, eat lunch with it and say goodbye to it in the afternoon for another literary affair. My mom would go after my ass in a bad way when I refuse to leave the bed to do chores because I'm too busy reading, too busy living in another universe with castles and pink aliens and other romantic things like death. Ah. Those were the days.

When I got really tangled up in the innarnets, my attention span became too short for anything as time-consuming as a novel. I'd spend my time in front of the computer for hours on end trolling The Man Blog forums and chatting with my online friends. And blogging. So my diet of books was replaced by innarnet crap. And hooey what do you know, all those chat sessions and forum and blog posts actually did something reading can only partially do: I began writing better. And getting a, hang on, a sense of humor! Just smile along please. Yay.

So. I'm going to do a little whoring here and talk about blogs that do not make me feel bad about giving up books for the interwubs. They're intellectually stimulating reads; I appreciate good writing when I come across it.

Mike Villar: Rising Internet Star

Politically incorrect, lewd, mad, satirical—Mike Villar. He's that despicable man who authored the Atrocities of Friendster series, probably someone you wouldn't trust your dog with if she's not ovulating and you don't want her to get pregnant. But. The thing is that he's actually a very sensitive guy trying to deal with the world by dishing out funny shit to it on a regular basis. He's very supportive of his friends and give good advice, too. Nice guy. If there's one thing you have to know about him though, it's that about 80% of the stuff on his blog is fo' real. Seriously.

Ade Magnaye: Noisy Noisy Man

Now what can I say about Ade. His Jologs series have scored him death threats. That good enough? Another internet asshole who gets dozens of readers for his light wit. But really, he's pretty decent and pretty nice. He has this guy-next-door vibe that makes girls swoon for him all over the place. No really. I think it's something about his man boobs? I hear they're very attractive. To me, he will always go down as that guy I called because I had no one else to talk to and was lonely like shit. You wouldn't want to see me that way. He sat that one through.

Benj: Atheista

An atheist, also from UP Manila. I like how his blog contains human interest stories and how he discusses political and social issues in a clear and methodical manner. Or maybe it's simply because I agree with his opinions, because we more or less think the same way in the same frame of reference. I'm almost atheist anyway.

Searching For Pablo

Fucking good writer, I think he's from Mindanao. I came across this blog while he was copy-pasting his stuff from his old blog, I think. I don't know too much about him, just that I love reading him. So just read him goddammit.

Rambling Virus

Peter always said this is how Mike Villar is going to be given another decade. Virus's writing can only be described as…honest. Barefaced. Frank. I don't sense pretension. I feel he writes because he has all these things he's saw and lived through that he has to share them to people. Just that. That urge to share. It's probably just me but that's how I feel when I read him.

Totomai

Awesome photography. His is my favorite photoblog. He blogs about his travels and his life in general and his posts are supplemented by beautiful pictures. Not only a must-read, but also a must-see.

That's enough for today I guess. These blogs are only those I can name from the top of my head; there are probably more if I think hard enough. But I don't want to think hard enough right now because I'm hungry. I only had three calorie-packed donuts for breakfast so. Yeah.  Oh, also please do suggest other good reads. Besides yourself of course. Comment comment comment!

I sense some blog awarding of sorts.

Posted by Niko at May 23, 2007, 2:04 pm

Correction. I’m probably going to be the same 10 years from now. The only difference maybe I would have sired like 4 illegitimate children by then.

Posted by Mikey at May 23, 2007, 2:11 pm

niko: maybe? everyone’s been linking everybody up and i said what the hell i’d go ahead and do the same thing.

mikey: gah, ask peter.

Posted by lizette at May 23, 2007, 2:30 pm

Atheista? you’re joking right???

Posted by Marco, the site guy at May 23, 2007, 2:35 pm

YES ARE YOU?

Posted by Mikey at May 23, 2007, 2:49 pm

you fuckers why don’t you cut benj some slack! he’s okay. okay?

Posted by lizette at May 23, 2007, 3:05 pm

LOLZ. i pray over both your souls.

Posted by Marco, the site guy at May 23, 2007, 3:07 pm

thanks for the nice words, Liz - even if you’re only kidding. :)

Posted by benj at May 23, 2007, 4:16 pm

Where’s Steel on the list?

Posted by whack at May 23, 2007, 4:24 pm

@marco

atheists (i myslef) don’t believe in superficial beings, praying over their souls will result to nothing.

waste that thing on someone else.

Posted by snoozebutton at May 23, 2007, 7:14 pm

hey, totomai’s pics look sooo cool! ^^

Posted by saturn at May 23, 2007, 7:22 pm

“He has this guy-next-door vibe that makes girls swoon for him all over the place.”

Ah-Buh?

Posted by Ade at May 23, 2007, 9:11 pm

@snoozebutton

Hence the inherent sacrcasm in my comment which stung you so much you just had to point that out. Stupet atheists. Go build yourself a church biznatch.

Gods! there’s nothing worse than and Atheist preaching about atheism.

Watta lol.

Posted by Marco, the site guy at May 24, 2007, 12:14 am

Who’s preaching? Or were you being sarcastic again?

Posted by benj at May 24, 2007, 2:17 am

For the record, if I’m preaching anything, it’s secularism. Atheism is impossible to preach. To even suggest that somebody is doing it is ridiculous.

Posted by benj at May 24, 2007, 2:21 am

Hey benj you saw an @ on your name? No? Well then shoo.

Posted by Marco, the site guy at May 24, 2007, 7:29 am

benj: so sweat. ;)

whack: where’s steel on the list? look for it.

snoozebutton: who might you be? might you be someone i know?

saturn: YOU SAID IT!

ade: ayaw mo? :( i meant it.

marco: you go have your fun, luffles. :*

i want to clarify two things: first, even if i’m seeing marco and call him luffles his opinion does not reflect mine. like i said above, i’m almost atheist anyway. second, i’d appreciate it if people i might know stop posting anonymously. you give me a headache checking out the IPs. -.-

Posted by lizette at May 24, 2007, 9:23 am

I’m sorry, I must’ve read this entry wrongly. I thought I saw my name up there somewhere. :D

In a way, yes you are correct. There is that urge to share and for others to learn. But writing has always been a want/like/wish (call it whatever you like), since childhood and I really did not try to develop academically.

Thank you very much Lizzy for your kind words. :)

And I must add, that your style of writing is admirable. Your play of words is very creative, yet does not lose the essence of the topic at hand. :) Oh yeah, I agree with Pablo being a very good writer as well.

Posted by Virus at May 24, 2007, 10:22 am

i hate my internet connection. i’ve wirtten so much an it all goes down the drain after disconnecting…brrr

anyway ^.^

i think you should have an award giving body. you know loads of good writers in this industry, our blog world that is. ^.^

Posted by psyche at May 24, 2007, 10:51 am

Hey Liz, this is cool. Like really. Good mix you got on here.

Mike, 4 kids eh? Will they have blingage like yours? Yeah I heard. Wicked bro! Also, I miss you. Hug?

Marco! mwehehehe. Such a stupet, yes?

Ade, quit acting all innocent. You hoard all the wimmins!

Hey Benj. ‘Sup bro?

Hey Virus! Our war fizzled out rather quickly did it not? Feh. Shall we launch another attack or will it be overkill?

Liz, your photos rock too. The one up there I totally approve of. If I were to give it a title I’d call it, “Sexily Contemplating the Edibility of Nearby Foliage”.

Posted by Adam Mordo at May 24, 2007, 11:11 am

mordo: why won’t mike lunch with us? :(

also, the Nearby Foliage is made of plastic. unfortunately. thanks boss!

Posted by lizette at May 24, 2007, 12:14 pm

now that’s what i call a sexy pic :D

Posted by akira at May 24, 2007, 2:20 pm

Not that I’m bothering or anything, but why Luffles? I can’t help but crave for potato chips when I read it. (And go green with clichéd cheesiness, or maybe because I’m just all envious sorts.)

Posted by Niko at May 24, 2007, 10:35 pm

eeeee~ i heart books more than i heart the innarnet. i dunno. there’s something about books that make them more intriguing. i read the 4th harry potter in ebook form. i swear, i will never read another novel-ebook. hurts eyes.yes.

Posted by keysi at May 25, 2007, 1:58 am

akira: why thank you. ^_^

niko: cliched cheesines is the It! aw don’t worry dear you’ll find your own to be cheesy about.

keysi: haha, i am not really totally giving up books. maybe this is what i’d call a book-reading hiatus. i guess i’ll get tired of the innarnets eventually. well, i got tired of books. thus, i can get tired of everything else.

Posted by lizette at May 25, 2007, 2:20 pm

just dont get tired of living. lol. scary shit there. or is it? shinigamis rock.

Posted by keysi at May 25, 2007, 11:43 pm

hi liz, been a constant reader of your entries. i was surprised and honored to be included in your “recommended” (i cant think of any term as of now) blogs. thanks. i hope i can do more sensible topics soon. i really appreciate your visits to my site, im new to blogging and its really a fun way to interact with other people.

now, you turn off your PC and feed your angry stomach.

thanks again.

Posted by totomai at May 26, 2007, 2:03 pm

keysi: good point. pray tell, what are shinigamis?

totomai: sensible topics are anything that makes sense to you. if you write about it then it must make sense to you, even matter to you. so to shit with readers looking for sensible posts. and yeah, blogging is fun no?

Posted by lizette at May 27, 2007, 6:35 am

hi lizette.
(should I be calling you ate? hehe.)

I’ve been reading thru your blog often, and I dunno but I’m compelled to write comments today.

I feel exactly the same about books. I used to be able to read several books a month, but I’ve noticed that now, I’d always prefer netsurfing over books. I could hardly finish reading novels any more. But lucky you, you get a positive side on your writing. I, on the other hand, gave up blogging too. I find that I like reading other people’s ramblings than mine.

don’t bother dropping by my blog.
nothing’s worth reading there today.

Posted by Sabrina at June 7, 2007, 5:33 pm

oh, I can answer for keysi too.

shinigami is japanese for death god.

I’m guessing he likes DeathNote. haha.
ako din. :p (kenichi matsuyama!!!)
